When starting with affiliate marketing there are a few things you have to keep in mind. In order to get succes with affiliate marketing you need to think and behave like a marketer. Affiliate marketing 5-10 years back was way different than today. Backthen you could promote any product with any website or landingpage and get sales. Today is different. People are getting smarter, and are exposed to way more ads and their time span is much less.
In order to keep your audience attention, make sure to keep them engaged and create trust, authority and respect right from the beginning of your relationship. You would not succeed with affiliate marketing if you just create a blank website with a few blogpost, shoot a few ads on Facebook and call it a day. It takes time and hard effort to succeed with affiliate.
However if take your time to actually learn the skills needed with SEO, content marketing and good copywriting you have the opportunities to create a lot of money with affiliate marketing. Once you get the traffic and attention the income is pretty much passive.
The core of affiliate marketing and how to do affiliate is basically a 5 step process:

- You find a product you want to promote
- Do a search for “product name” affiliate program. If it’s on Amazon, you can also promote it
- Sign up for their affiliate program
- You get a special link that allows the merchant to track the people who clicked your link
- If they buy the product, you get a commission.
I’ll get more in details about these 5 steps below, but first let’s discuss what affiliate marketing actually is.
What is affiliate marketing and how does it work?
Affiliate marketing is a form of marketing where a business can partner up with affiliates. The affiliates can be people like you and me or other businesses. The affiliates get a commission either a % of a sale or maybe a fixed cut of 20$ or whatever for every e-mail signup or purchase the affiliate can generate for the business.
Affiliate marketing is a good way for business to find good advertisers who can promote their products and the affiliates can earn good commissions for providing their marketing and sales skills online.
You can promote pretty much any product in any niche since affiliate marketing is a very known and popular marketing method to use.
So where will I be able to find these affiliate offers? Well either you can search for “bussiness x + affiliate program” in Google to search for a product that you like. If not you can use affiliate marketing-places like JVZoo, MaxBounty or Clickbank where you can browse between 100’s or 1000’s of affiliate offers within their platform.
Here you will be able to pick and choose whatever you like and you can view their commission plan, landingpages and much more within the platform.
Another great affiliate opportunity is Amazon Associates which is Amazon’s affiliate program, which is also extremely popular. Amazon typical have lower commission rates than some of the other affiliate plans, but generally converts very well and can have much higher cart size and volume of the order.
How to find the right product to promote
When I’m trying to decide what to promote I always ask myself the following questions:
- Do I use this product?
- Will the vast majority of my readers benefit from using this product?
- Is the buying process easy?
- Is there a good affiliate commission rate? (Not always necessary)
If I answer yes to each of these questions, then it’s probably a good fit and worth promoting.
Action Item: Make a list of products that you use that you think your blog audience would benefit from using as well. Try to think of as many as you can.
And remember, these can include complementary products as well. If you write about travel, for instance, you can include tons of complementary products like luggage, headphones, backpacks, and clothing too.
How to start with affiliate marketing and get your first commission
Now that we know a little thing about affiliate marketing let’s dive more into how you actually are going to earn some income with affiliate marketing. I have created a few steps we need to go through in order to make sure we’re right on track.
- Research a niche you want to create content about (mostly text but also videos if you like)
The first step is to find the niche you want to create content around. It’s not worth creating a random website with all kind of random topics and blog post. You want to create authority within your niche so when visitors visit your site they think you are the expert and they can trust what you write and say.
When researching think about topics that have your interest, can be anything from horse riding, to DJ’ing, food or fitness. There are no limits and if you search for “popular blogs + [niche/interest]” you will be able to find a lot of inspiration from other blogs and websites within this niche.
In order to find a good niche, you will need a niche that have enough search traffic that it would actually make sense to create the website around that topic, but not too competitive so the website never will be able to rank on Google. You want to have a blog that generates income and because of this the blog will need traffic, which will be coming from SEO if done correctly. - Research relevant products in your niche you want to promote (can be both digital and physical products)
When you have decided which niche you want to work with you’ll need to find some awesome products to promote. If you are in the digital marketing niche like we are on “prymadigitalmarketing” then we would focus on SEO tools, Social media planning tools, data-analyzer tools, hosting and similar service, mostly digital products. If you decided to with the fitness niche (really really competitive though) you might want to promote website that sell protein powder, fitness masterclasses etc.
There are no right and wrong when it comes to choosing your products but remember, as an affiliate your are promoting a product. If you don’t like it yourself then don’t promote it. If you don’t like it why should you tell other people to like it. It is way easier to sell a product that you like and have tried than vice versa, don’t get too focused about the commission plans.
- Sign-up for the affiliate programs and get your affiliate link
So, when you have chosen 3-5 or maximum of 10 affiliate products you want to promote, get started with signing up for their platforms. Sometimes you’ll get instant verified, sometimes you’ll need to answer a few questions or tell how you want to promote it before you can get verified and started.
Some business are more strict than others when it comes to promoting and marketing and only want to work with the best and most serious marketers, make sure to find a good deal with a good an helpfull business. Look out of affiliate material when signing up. Some businesses are more willing to help the community than others.
- Create your website
Now this is definitely also an important step.
Create your website, where you actually are going to publish the content and promote the products. You can wix, wordpress or anything else that you like, but we generally recommend wordpress (we don’t work with wordpress or get paid for saying this btw) because it’s free (use wordpress.org and not wordpress.com) and have the best backend and usability.
- Create content for your website
Creating the content is often where people fail. This is the most time consuming part and can get very frustrating. We recommend that in order to get started and ranking on Google and get good traffic you will need at least 50 blog post, with an average minimum of 2500 words.
Yes this can sound like a lot of but remember that it’s getting more and more competitive everyday, so in order to get going, you’ll need to provide real, genuine and helpfull content.
